Species category: Broadleaf Weed
Scientific name: Medicago spp.
Medic – What is it?
Believed to be of Mediterranean origin, Medic species are now widespread across Australia and are well adapted to dry conditions. It is commonly referred to as Annual Medic; this annual weed forms a dense, mat-like coverage across the turf.
It has trifoliate leaves and the three leaflets are heart shaped, with shallow teeth towards their tips and dark spots near the centre.
Yellow flowers appear singly or up to four in dense clusters
When does Medic occur?
Flowers appear from April to August and Medic prefers well drained soils.
What damage or effect will Medic have?
Medic can be competitive and difficult to control in turf, growing at a different rate and texture to the grasses. Its dense mat-like coverage can suffocate turf growing underneath.
