Autumn Can Mean Increased Caterpillar Populations

Print page

Autumn can be a time when caterpillar populations build up quickly, and this is already being reported in some areas.

Turf pest caterpillars;

  • Live in the thatch, core holes or soil tunnels.
  • Emerge at night to feed.
  • There are several species grouped into;
    • Armyworms
    • Cutworms
    • Webworms
  • All turf species can be attacked.

Keep an eye out for bird activity and scout in the thatch for the presence of frass.

Due to the nocturnal activity of the pests late evening or nighttime spraying can sometimes give better results.

Tempo® Xtra has good activity on caterpillars.

Send an e-mail or photograph to jyri.kaapro@envu.com if you have any experiences of turf with either of these symptoms.
