Protect Farm Fencelines With Esplanade

Farm fence lines can be considered the “ground zero” for weed growth and spread on to the property. Find out how Esplanade® can help farmers maintain weed-free fence lines and protect their crops effectively.

In recent conversations with rural councils, cattle farmers, and land managers, it is evident that fenceline management is becoming a higher priority activity to more landowners than just crop farmers. It is considered vitally important to help control weed ingress on your property to help protect and maintain assets, while also maximizing yields and forage. Farm fence lines can be considered the “ground zero” for weed growth and spread on to the property.

Farmers that understand the importance of a regular fence line maintenance program that incorporates the use of herbicides can encounter resistance issues with glyphosate due to overuse and their properties can become susceptible to subsequent weed ingress.

Rotation of, or tank mixing with different Mode of Action (MoA) herbicides is one option to help combat herbicide resistance, along with timing your application to treat smaller weeds in autumn instead of spraying larger weeds in spring. Another option is to incorporate the use of pre-emergent (residual) herbicides to enhance the longevity of weed control.

Pre-emergent herbicides can include benefits like cost savings where multiple knockdown applications may be required and lead to reduced selection pressure on subsequent post-emergent applications. (GRDC pre-emergent herbicides fact sheet April 2022) The use of pre-emergent herbicides can also reduce the number of treatments needed throughout the year.

Esplanade® Herbicide from Envu, is a unique Group 29 Pre-emergent herbicide that offers a new mode of action to assist farmers in their fight to manage weed herbicide resistance. Esplanade provides long-term residual control of over 30 difficult to manage grass and broadleaf weeds and is ideally suited for use in fence lines, around farm buildings and other hard stand areas where it is desirable to remain weed free.

Esplanade has minimal post-emergent activity and generally doesn’t control weeds that have emerged. If weeds are already present it should be mixed with a suitable post emergent herbicide.

A fence line trial conducted by independent researchers in West Wyalong NSW found that Esplanade demonstrated equivalent efficacy against industry standard residual herbicides.

Researchers have also stated Esplanade provides long term residual control without harming nearby established trees, whereas some comparable residual herbicides should be avoided being used if trees are growing nearby. (Dr Peter Boutsalis, 13 Dec 23 GRDC Ground Cover Nicole Baxter)

Another benefit of Esplanade is its low use rate. At 150mL/ha or 30mL/100L, it is significantly lower than industry standards whilst offering similar residual performance as demonstrated in the trial.

Esplanade Herbicide can assist landholders, councils, and farmers in the battle of maintaining their fence lines from weed infestations. With the offering of a different MoA, long term residual control, low mix rate and safe to use near growing trees, trust Esplanade to be your first line of defence in your fence maintenance program.
