To rank in local search one of the signals Google uses in it complex algorithm is mentions or citations. Google categorises local ranking signals into three board groups - “Relevance”, “Prominence” and “Distance”.

The number of mentions about your business on the web falls under the category Prominence”. Google assumes that if your business is mentioned more times on the web then it must be popular. Trust plays a role as well so if authoritative sites mention your business than it assumes that recognition means you’re a real business.
